The FDD received letters from the President's Office and the Ministry of Internal and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government on the letter FDD sent to the President and the Government (including this ministry) on requesting the ban the use of plastic and polythene within the Government institutes before the CITES CoP18 this year in Sri Lanka.
The letters were copied to the FDD and the President's Office requested the Ministry of Environment to act on the matter and the Ministry has requested all Provincial Secretaries to make necessary arrangements to ban the use of plastic and polythene within the Government institutes before the CITES CoP18 May this year. The FDD will monitor the progress on this important matter.

The Forum on Disarmament and Development (FDD) forwarded a letter on the 12th February 2019 requesting the President to ban the use of plastic and polythene before the CITES CoP18 conference which will take place from May-June 2019. The ban was requested to be practiced in institutions like the Parliament, ministries and the importance and establishment of a recycling plants too was emphasized.
This has been published under Special Notices in the Ministry of Internal and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government website, and we are happy to see the positive response received from the government on this matter.

The Forum on Disarmament and Development (FDD), on the 24th January 2019 successfully launched the book on "The CITES & Sri Lanka" at the Sri Lanka Foundation (SLF). The publication project is supported by the EU in Sri Lanka and the event was graced by M.G.C. Sooriyabandara Director General Department of Wildlife, Samantha Gunasekara Director CITES CoP18 Secretariat and Hakeem Abu Backar Senior Lecturer in Law attached to the University of Colombo.

Sri Lanka will host the CITES CoP18 in May this year. The CITES CoP18 will be the biggest international gathering after the 1948 independence of SL. During the book launch we encouraged the Government to have local regulations in place to implement the CITES in SL before the CITES CoP18 for various important reasons & to engage with the international community to crack down the illicit wildlife trade & also accede to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

The book was published in all three languages and they can be downloaded through here- https://fddsrilanka.blogspot.com/p/download-fdd-publications.html
